With Geneva airport only an hour's drive, Chamonix is one of the 'closest' resorts in the Alps. You can get from your front door to the mountains in only a few hours! Budget airlines have regular flights from many airports in the UK and across europe to Geneva; book early and you can get here for next to nothing.

Chamonix was famously 'discovered' by Englishmen Windham and Pococke in 1741, beginning tourism in the valley. Two local men, Paccard and Balmat, were the first to summit Mont Blanc in 1786 and you can see their statues in the town square. The first cable car was built in 1924 (since replaced!) and Chamonix hosted the first ever winter olympics in that year.

Getting Around

Chamonix valley encompasses the historic towns of Servoz, Les houches, Chamonix, Argentiere, Le Tour and Vallorcine. Countless smaller villages and hamlets dot the valley and delight visitors with their traditional architecture and old world charm.

Free bus services run to all areas of the valley, summer and winter. Local trains run half-hourly in high season from Servoz to Vallorcine and local buses run daily to and from Courmayeur.
